    Swachh Bharat Pakhwara

    1. The Delhi Government Authority celebrated Swachh Bharat Pakhwara on 7th June, 2016, which is a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
    2. It was a fortnight cleanliness drive to realize the Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of Swachh bharat which came in action from 16th May- 31st May, 2016.
    3. The Central Silk board instructed all R&D units and its sub units to submit report along with pictures on Swachh Bharat Pakhwara.
    4. As per the, Central report, R & D units submitted their report with
    5. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) also organised Swachh bharat pakhwara at rajiv Gandhi bhawan ,New Delhi
    6. AAI is responsible for maintaining and managing civil aviation department.
    7. In various departments of Delhi government, this drive came in action as a Swachh Bharat Pakhwara –  a part of Swachh bharat Abhiyan.
    8. Various other program took place in this ceremony such as pledge for employees, debate competition, article writing, awareness workshop, review of old files reports and disposal of old items of stores, new techniques were also discussed in order to clean India, etc.

    World Environment Day –  “Join the race to make the World a better place”

    1. 5th June, 2016, is observed as World Environment Day and this year theme is “Join the race to make the World a better place”.
    2. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June so as to raise global awareness for environment.
    3. It is run by United Nations Environment Programme   
    4. This event went for a week  for creating awareness in the world.

    Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG)

    NSG

    1. The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) consists of nuclear supplier countries. It was formed in the 1974 after a nuclear explosion from non- nuclear country.
    2. Therefore, NSG was created, which is aimed that nuclear technology will be transferred for peaceful purposes.
    3. As per NSG guidelines mentioned by International Atomic Energy Agency, uranium and plutonium would not be transferred for nuclear explosive activities.  
    4. Initially NSG-committee has seven members and they are Canada, France, West Germany, Japan, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States Of America. While in later period the participation was expanded and now in 2016, NSG has  48-members.
    5. As per the NSG guidelines, NPT i.e. Non-Proliferation treaty has to be signed by all the member states.
    6. A two-day meeting of NSG was held on11th June, 2016 in Vienna for the approval of India’s application in NSG.
    7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made five country visit throughout the World for the purpose of NSG membership.
    8. And that is how, on 8th June, 2016 , Modi delivered a speech in a joint meeting of Congress at the Washington D.C, the U.S
    9. During his 45-minute speech, The House clapped 64-times out of which 11-times a standing ovation was received by him.   
    10. Next meeting regarding NSG and membership of India is going to be held on 20th June, 2016.

    1. The Union  Health Minister J.P. Nadda addressed  a high-level meeting on HIV/AIDS at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
    2. On 9th June, 2016,India made a commitment to fast track the progress on ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
    3. According to Health Minister J.P Nadda, an increase in investment in this field should be focussed.
    4. He proposed “a five point strategy” in the support of his commitment.
    5. The five-point strategy includes-
      • To adopt the  fast track target  that is to reach needy people as soon as possible with treatment and and to maintain  TRIPS flexibility.
      • Efforts to  restore the respect and dignity of individuals.
      • Global Unity
      • .Prevention and precautions.
      • The time limit to end the AIDS epidemic as public health threat was set to 2030.
      • The agendas of sustainable development goals was also taken into consideration.
      • Providing low cost generic medicines may also prove instrumental  as 90% of medicines are provided by Indian pharmaceutical companies.
      • f) The annual target of $26 billion in funding  including $13 billion for the next three years was  ensured  by the Secretary-General  to reinforce and expand  the “unique, multi-sector, multi-actor approach” of UNAIDS.
    • MTCR – Missile technology control regime

    1. India has been admitted to members of missile technology control regime (MTCR)
    2. This was cleared when there was no objection from 34 nations committee till the deadline of objection expired.
    3. By entering into MTCR group india can now buy ‘High end missile technology’.
    4. MTCR group was established in april 1987.
    5. Initially there were 34 countries and now with india’s entry the no. will become 35.
    6. Israel , romania, slovakia and macedonia are unilateral adherents.
    7. The objective of MTCR group  is to slow down the spread missiles and its technology which can be used for biological attacks and nuclear attacks.
    8. The technologies related to ‘export of ballistic missiles’,unmanned aerial vehicles ,space launch vehicles,drones,remotely piloted vehicles, cruise missiles , sounding rockets and their components are of major concern under this.
    9. The membership of india could prove indispensable step in curbing terrorism by getting missile technology on counter-terrorism.

    1. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy released on 8th June, 2016, India became the third largest oil consumer in the world.
    2. India has transcended Japan to become the world’s 3rd -largest oil consumer.
    3. India’s  oil demand rushed to  8.1 % in 2015.
    4. India has oil demand of 4.1 million barrels a day as per  BP statistical review of world energy .
    5. The top position in world has been acquired by  U.S.
    6. US has Oil demand  of about 19.39 million barrel per day followed by china  which has oil demand of about 11.96 million barrel per day
    7. The contribution of  India  in world’s oil consumption  is about 4.5 % in the year of 2015.
    8. The ‘oil’ is the world’s leading fuel with contributing percentage of 32.9%  followed by coal with 29.2% share and natural gas with 23.8%.

    India set to sell supersonic-missile Brahmos to Vietnam

    1. Indian Defense unit is ready to export one of the World’s fastest anti-ship cruise missile – Brahmos to Vietnam.
    2. The technology of Brahmos is based on Russian P-800 Onyx which is developed in between India and Russia for the last ten years.
    3. Brahmos- anti ship missile cruise can be launched through submarines, ships, land and aircraft. It has a capability to hit the target with a range of 290 km.This missile is three times faster than the speed of the sound. The cost of the cruise missile is estimated to be about $3 million.
    4. Though, it is big achievement for the Indians arms Industry, Eric Wertheim.This supersonic Missile is named after two rivers – Brahmaputra and Moskva.
    5. After Vietnam, India is planning to sell its fastest missile to Indonesia, Chile, Brazil and South Africa.
    6. Although, eleven more countries are showing interest to buy this supersonic missile. These Countries includes – Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.
    7. India accounted a 14% of total imports during 2011-14.
    8. While by selling supersonic missile – Brahmos to these countries, India is expected to fetch more revenue.

    Amazon to invest $3 billion in India

    1. Amazon Chief executive Jeff Bezos said on 7th June, 2016 that the company would invest an additional $3 billion(Rs.20,000 crore) in India.
    2. Though during Modi’s U.S visit, he had a separate meeting with Jeff Bezos in Washington D.C right after the roundtable meeting with top CEO in which Bezos was present with 22 other chief executives.
    3. The Amazon CEO Bezos promised to invest that much amount just after the moment when online taxi services- leading company Uber announced to expand its investment in india to $3.5 billion.
    4. The Internet and mobile Association of India estimates that the e-commerce market will expand up to 68%  within one year, which is going to be worth of 2.1 lakh crore in December 2016.

    1. Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray at the final round of French Open 2016 lon 5th June, 2016.
    2. By winning French title and his first french open Novak djokovic became the first player  to win all four grand slams  titles since 1969.
    3. John McEnroe the former world no.1 professional tennis player remarked the djokovic’ win as  “his best shot ever”.
    4. This was djokovic’s 24th win against Murray in about 34 matches.
    5. The duration of match was about 3 hrs & 3 mins and the Match statistics are  3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
    6. The venue of the French open 2016 final match was Stade Roland Garros paris ,france.

    8. This was 115th edition of french open.

    Muhammad Ali veteran boxer

    1. Muhammad Ali was a most famous African American Olympic Boxer of Twentieth century.
    2. In his early phase of career, Ali was known as inspiring fighter.
    3. At the age of 12, he started training for a boxing, and hence he won gold medal in 1960 summer olympics in Rome, when he was just 18 years old.
    4. Thereafter, he transformed his religion into Islam.
    5. At the age of 22, he won WBC and WBA championships in 1964.
    6. In his boxing career, he fought for total of 61 fights out of which he won 56, which is a great success in itself.
    7. Fighter Muhammad Ali was first diagnosed by Parkinson’s disease in 1984 and In 1996, at Atlanta he was honoured of lighting an olympic torch during its opening ceremony. The whole ambiance of the ceremony was created as most emotional event.
    8. And that is how, he was not just a boxer,  but known as a real fighter.
    9. On 3rd June, 2016, Boxing lead Mohammad Ali was died at the of 74 due to suffering from respiratory illness and suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
    10. His funeral was held on 10th June, 2016 in his hometown Louisville Kentucky.

    P.M Narendra Modi tour – five countries

    1. P.M Narendra Modi is expected to feature India’s application to NSG(nuclear supplier . group) while meeting NSG members during his visit to five countries i.e. Afghanistan, Qatar, Switzerland, the U.S and Mexico
    2. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first destination was Afghanistan on 4th June,2016.
    3. Modi met Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani and inaugurated Afghan-Indian friendship Dam, which was earlier known as Salma Dam in Herat province on 4th June, 2016.
    4. From Afghanistan, Modi was gone for an energy-rich country Qatar on 5th June, 2016.  
    5. From Qatar, P.M travelled to Switzerland and  met Switzerland’s President Johann Schneider on 5th June, 2016.
    6. Indian Government is expected to engage in the automatic exchange of information with Switzerland.
    7. Although, the prime objective of this trip is the membership of NSG.
    8. India is formally applied for the membership of the NSG on 12th May, 2016.
    9. On 6th June, 2016, he travelled for a two-day visit to the U.S.
    10. After attending the joint session of the US congress meeting, Modi will leave on 8th June, 2016.
    11. On 8th June, 2016, The Prime Minister will reach Mexico at the invitation of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

    Automatic fan and Light system – New Delhi railway Station

    1. An automated light and fan control system has been launched at the New delhi Railway station on 31st May, 2016.
    2. The new system of fans and lights at all platforms can be controlled from one monitor using GPRS technology.
    3. It contains an electrical command centre.
    4. And the distribution boxes can be controlled with the help of GPRS(General Packet radio Service).
    5. Particular icons were created on computer screens for each box, which shows the status of the box if these are switch on/off and working/malfunctioning.
    6. This system is entirely wireless technology.
    7. It takes around 40 seconds to follow the operational command.
    8. These boxes at the station are monitored 24*7.
    9. The system follows general scheduling, pre set according to the time of the day but can be changed at any time.
    10. There is also a provision of using limited fans and lights.
    11. A parallel system has also been installed which helps to control power generation and online generation.

    1. a) On World No tobacco day i.e. 31st May, 2016, World Health Organisation (WHO) is creating awareness to introduce plain packaging of tobacco which refers “strict prohibition”.
    2. b) According to WHO and (WHO FCTC)  (WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Secretariat), by implementing plain packaging the sales of tobacco products will be decreased in demand and thus saving lives.
    3. c) Under this restriction on  use of logos, colours,brand images and promotional features on packaging and standard colour and font style is laid attention.
    4. d) “Plain packaging reduces  the glamour and restricts tobacco advertising and promotion.
    5. e)  This was done on the occasion of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ that is observed on 31st may worldwide.
    6. f)  About 6 million people die  annually due to use of tobacco and tobacco-related diseases, that is approximately 1 person in every 6 seconds.
    7. g)  This year theme was- ‘Get ready for plain packaging’ .

    India’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) grew 7.9 % in the fourth quarter of 2015-16

    1. According to data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) 7.9 per cent growth in the fourth quarter has been recorded .
    2. In this, the farm sector grew by 2.3% as compared 1.0% in  contraction of December quarter .
    3. The %  growth of  Mining was 8.6% in the March quarter from 7.1% in the previous quarter.
    4. Electricity, water and gas production growth surged to 9.3 per cent from 5.6 % in the December quarter.
    5. According to  CSO  it has revised the GDP data for the first 3  quarters released earlier from 7.6 %, 7.7 % and 7.3% to 7.5%, 7.6 % and 7.2%, respectively.
    6. Also, the growth of in the “agriculture, forestry and fishing” sector was revised upwards to 1.2% in 2015-16 as compared to  1.1 % in the advance estimates for the same period
    7. The Economic Survey had projected a wide band of 7-7.75 % growth in 2016-17,
    8. Also  according to RBI in its April monetary policy review  number of factors could impinge upon the growth outlook for the current fiscal.

    Equalisation levy- a Tax on cross-border digital services

    1. The Government announced on 31st May, 2016 that it will be implementing an equalisation levy, a tax on cross-border digital services from 1st june, 2016.
    2. 6 per cent on services pertaining to cross border digital transactions will come into effect from 1st June, 2016.
    3. According to C A Gupta, Partner, Deloitte Haskins and Sells, equalisation levy is leviable only on payments relating to online advertisements,
    4. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has notified the rules for equalisation levy and said the tax will come into force from 1st June, 2016.

    Energy security and climate change – Agreement

    1. India has signed the pact with U.S to promote cooperation in energy security and climate change.
    2. In order to boost relations to a new level and  to enhance cooperation in energy security and climate change, this pact has been signed.
    3. The objective of this project was to promote sustainable growth.
    4. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)was signed in New Delhi, India between the Government of India and the United States on 2nd June, 2016 to promote cooperation in energy security, clean energy and climate change.
    5. The agreement was signed in the presence of Power Secretary P K Pujari and US Ambassador to India Richard R Verma .
    6. The efforts of the Indian government were appreciated .
    7. The objective of the pact is to boost energy ties between the two countries through increased bilateral engagement and further joint initiatives.
    8. In this clean energy technologies in both countries will be shared.
    9. This will pave the way for the rise in greenhouse gas emissions.
    10. Promoting Energy Access through Clean Energy (PEACE) expansion will be the key feature  of the pact.

    ‘facebook live’ video chat technology to talk International Space Station

    1. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg revealed a new technology on 1st June, 2016 by which astronauts can do converse from the International Space Station through Facebook video broadcast.
    2. Mark Zuckerberg launched live Earth to space call with three astronauts who are on board of ISS ( International Space Station) through new technology called ‘facebook live’ as mentioned by NASA.
    3. Facebook Live enables users to do live video broadcasts in  groups and events.
    4.  Zuckerberg had a 20 minute call with  astronauts Tim peake(ESA), Tim kopra (nasa) and Jeff Williams (NASA).
    5. The Upcoming call of zuckerberg and astronauts can be viewed via NASA official Facebook page on 1st June, 2016.

    1. India joined the The Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation (HCOC)
    2. India became the 138th country to subscribe to the Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation (HCOC).
    3. This step taken by India is cordially welcomed by  U.S.
    4. The United States welcomes this step by India and calls on all countries who have not yet done so to subscribe to the HCOC.
    5. The HCOC is a voluntary mechanism that has built a broad international predisposition against ballistic missile proliferation and promotes transparency and confidence building, including through the Subscribing States’ commitment to submit pre-launch notifications and annual declarations of their relevant policies.
    6. India’s subscription reinforces its support for International missile nonproliferation and will help increase transparency and strengthen security.

    South Korea’s 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

    1. On 2nd June, 2016, White tiger cub named ‘soohorang’ was presented as the official mascot for south korea’s 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
    2. The new mascot white tiger named “SOOHORANG” for the olympic winter games pyeongchang 2018 has been approved  by the IOC executive board.
    3. The white tiger is closely associated with korean mythology and culture.
    4. The white tiger  was considered  as a guardian of country that protected the country.
    5. In the name “Soohorang”  “Sooho” means “protection” and “rang” means ”tiger”
    6. The Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 is IOC Member Gunilla Lindberg.

    India – China Border Dispute

    1. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee visited China from 24th May-27th May,2016 to manage border dispute.
    2. Pranab Mukherjee arrived in in the highly industrialised Chinese city Guangzhou on May 24th, 2016.
    3. Besides meeting with Indian Community, Mr Mukherjee met Chinese President Xi Jinping on 26th May, 2016 in order to maintain peace and stability.
    4. India and China had a 19th round of Special Representatives meeting in may to resolve the disputes over 3488-km long Line of Actual Control (LAC).  
    5. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as Southern Tibet while India proclaims that the only  conflicted Aksai Chin area was occupied by China during 1962 war.
    6. Both the parties were agreed to maintain strategic communications and the primary reason of this meeting was to expand the areas of agreement.
    7. Mr. Mukherjee raised the issue of China blocking India’s bid to get Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) , so as to get the membership of  the Nuclear Supply group (NSG)
    8. India rejected the insistence of China to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty  (NPT) in order to become a member of Nuclear Supply group(NSG) and said that the France had not signed the NPT when it became a member of the NSG.

    2. The group of seven countries agreed on 27th May, 2016 to seek a global growth, agreement over currency issue and expressing concern over North Korea, Russia and maritime summit disputes involving China i.e. South China Sea.
    3. The 42nd G7 summit  was organised by Japan this year.
    4. The G7 committee made a 32-page declaration on market exchange rates to avoid competitive devaluation of their currencies.  
    5. G7 is expected to lead the area of energy policy by making the agreement for a global commitment of $100 billion.

    1. Indian Air Force successfully test fired a land- attack version of the supersonic cruise missile – Brahmos in the western sector on 27th May, 2016.

    3. As per the statement of defense department advanced version of version of BrahMos land-attack system was launched from a mobile autonomous launcher from Pokharan range at about 12 pm.

    6. Its destructive power is large due to high kinetic energy.

    3. The creation of the law will also improve India’s position in the World Bank’s Doing Business ranking.

    5. Bankruptcy typically involve concealment of assets, concealment or destruction of documents,conflicts of interest, fraudulent claims, false statements or declarations, and fee fixing or redistribution arrangements.
    6. For banks or lenders, the money recovered can be lent again,promoting efficient allocation of resources, besides development of financial markets such as a bond market with clarity on repayment for debtors.
    7. A committee headed by former law secretary T K Viswanathan has suggested a timeline of 180 days —extendable by 90 days — to deal with applications for resolving cases of bankruptcy.
    8. The proposal is to promote the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) as resolution corporation.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st  May, 2016 has launched Rs. 8,000 crore scheme to provide 5 crore free LPG connections to below Poverty Line (BPL) families using the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily giving up their subsidies.

    The scheme is called Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Mr. Modi has launched it on 1st May, 2016 at Ballia in Uttar Pradesh and is going to be launch in Dahod in Gujarat on 15th May, 2016.

    The ‘Give-it-Up’ campaign seeking the well-heeled to voluntarily surrender cooking gas subsidies for one year was launched in January,2015. Since the launch, 1.13 crore people have given-up LPG subsidies and are buying cooking gas at market price. The Importance of PMUJ scheme is that poor have limited access to Clean fuel (LPG) , LPG spread predominantly in urban and semi urban areas, use of fossil fuels and conventional fuel like cowdung has a serious health

    implications for women and Children. According to the experts, open fires in kitchen are equal to burning about 400 cigarettes in an hour. According to WHO, 5 Lakhs die every year due to heart disease, pulmonary diseases etc.Indoor air pollution is also responsible for significant number of acute respiratory diseases in young children. It will create awareness about its cost and

    health benefits . It will also introduce small cylinders of 2-5kg. It will create 1 lacks jobs in rural areas.innovation of distribution.It will introduce mobile money for bill payments. High cost-biomass is cheaper than LPG.Limited LPG distribution in remote and rural areas. Lack of awareness 40% of LPG deprived houses has no information about LPG connection process. Administrative issues-if no residential proofs. There is problem in getting connections.

    1. Commonwealth Physicist Sriram Ramaswamy :- He is a  professor in Bengaluru based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and director of TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hyderabad. He mainly works on two broad areas:

              a.) non-living imitations of self-propulsion

              b.)and collective movement of self-propelled (“active”) matter through fluids

    1.   Biochemist Ramanujan Hegde:- At present Mr. Ramanujan Hegde works at MRC Laboratory of Microbiology, UK. He is in scientific research and mainly deals with humans’ understanding of how newly made proteins are localised correctly inside cells.

    47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award:-

    Veteran actor and director Manoj Kumar will be conferred the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015. The award was given by the centre for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema and consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a shawl. The award is given on the basis of recommendations of a committee of renowned personalities set up by the centre. This year, a five-member jury comprising Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Salim Khan, Nitin Mukesh and Anup Jalota have recommended Kumar’s name for the award.

    Manoj Kumar was born in July 1937 in Abbottabad, then part of pre-Independent India. When he was at the age of 10, his family shifted to Delhi. After having graduation from Hindu College, University of Delhi,he decided to enter the film industry. After making a début with Fashion in 1957, Manoj Kumar got his first lead role in Kaanch Ki Gudia in 1960. In the following years, he played most memorable and challenging roles in films like Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi?, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Upkar, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan and Kranti. Do Badan was remembered for Raj Khosla’s direction and Manoj Kumar’s performance was outstanding in the film by Ravi and songs composed by lyricist Shakeel Badayuni.
